A love affair with the 9th highest mountain in the world - AKA Killer Mountain.
Trekking to Nanga Parbat BC is no big deal if you are doing it in perfect sunny weather and no backpack. Things become hard once you have 22kgs on your back - coupled with heavy snowfall and minus degree temperatures.
For our trek, we did everything on our own. We had no guide and no local support. We started hiking from Rakot Bridge to Fairy Point. This is a jeepable trek and takes 1 hour 30 minutes on jeep. To psyche ourselves for the next challenge that laid ahead, we decided to trek RKB to FP on foot. The total length of the trek was 15kms with an elevation gain of 2500m. The base of the trek was at 1100 meters and the top at about 2545 meters. This is where your nerves are really put to test. There is no water source after a few clicks, and by this time, you would have depleted all of your 4L water reserves. The heat from the rocky trek makes you sweet faster and puts body fluids to dangerously low levels. It took us 9 hours to reach FP and had to go through the ordeal of dehydration, and physical and mental exhaustion.
We camped at FP and started our hike to Fairy Meadows on the next day. The hike to FM is not that difficult, but the exhaustion of the previous day had our backs broken. After one hour of hike, it started to rain and the temperature dropped drastically. It took us roughly 4 hours to reach FM(Broad View Restuarant). The total distance from FP to FM is about 5kms with an elevation gain of about 900m (FM is at 3286m).
After reaching FM, we camped to regain our energy. At this point, we had little mobile phone battery left as Wikilok consumed most of our battery. On top of this, Bonfire and music did not let us sleep us throughout the night. The temperature during the night at FM dropped to -3 to -5. Luckily, we had top-notch equipment that kept us warm.
On the very next day, we moved towards BC. Distance from FM to Beyal is 5km and with an elevation gain of 300m, and BC stands at 3994m above sea level - with a total distance of 9km from FM. Approx it takes 5-7 hours from FM to BC. It was at this point, we were caught by heavy snowfall. Due to bad weather, the mountain covered behind clouds and we could not get a clear view of the beast - and we decided not to camp. Through snow, dirt, rain and sleets, we made haste towards Fairy-Point to head back to RWP,
In short, it was an amazing trip. The presence of the mountain makes you feel like a "minion". The mountain is arrogant, yet very calm. And it has to be like this - it is the 9th highest mountain in the world.
