A designação do nome Pico do Castelo é datada do século XV e proveio do facto de existir um forte para onde fugia a população da ilha, quando atacada por piratas franceses e pelos argelinos. A sua posição central e a maior facilidade de organizar a defesa das pessoas, fez deste um verdadeiro Castelo.
Iniciamos o trajeto no sítio do Moledo junto à Estrada Regional e, subindo pelo caminho florestal, permitirá duas alternativas para o percorrer: pelo lado Leste ou pelo Oeste do Pico do Facho. Seguimos pelo lado Leste que é mais longo e retornamos pelo lado Leste.
No percurso pudemos observar vestígios da antiga área agrícola e os muros emparelhados.
As paisagens do percurso são magníficas. No Miradouro do Canhão, no cume do Pico Castelo, temos em pano de fundo a cidade Vila Baleira, quase toda a extensão da ilha e, no horizonte, as Ilhas Desertas e a Ilha da Madeira.

The name of the name Pico do Castelo dates from the 15th century and came from the fact that there was a fort to which the island's population fled, when attacked by French pirates and Algerians. Its central position and the greater ease of organizing the defense of people, made this a true castle.
We start the journey at the Moledo site along the Estrada Regional and, going up the forest path, we will allow two alternatives to go through it: on the east side or on the west side of Pico do Facho. We continue on the east side, which is longer and return on the east side.
On the way we could see traces of the old agricultural area and the paired walls.
The landscapes of the route are magnificent. At the Canhão Viewpoint, on the summit of Pico Castelo, we have the backdrop of the city Vila Baleira, almost the entire length of the island and, on the horizon, the Desertas Islands and Madeira Islands.
