Just one hour from Rome, this moderate trail connects Palestrina with the hilltop village of Castel San Pietro Romano, blending archaeology, history, and natural beauty.
Begin at Porta San Martino in Palestrina (ancient Praeneste) and climb to the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia museum, where you'll find cafes, coworking spaces, and panoramic views of Rome. As you leave town, follow ancient Roman roads past rural villa ruins and necropolises.
The uphill route passes Roman Acropolis remains before reaching Castel San Pietro Romano, a historic outpost featuring the 10th-century Rocca dei Colonna fortress, Roman walls, and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo. The town is also famous for its appearance in the 1953 film "Pane, Amore e Fantasia."
For the full loop experience, visit the water fountain before continuing through the Monti Prenestini hills and forests with panoramic countryside views, completing the loop back to Palestrina.
From Rome, take a 30-minute train from Roma Termini to Zagarolo, then a 20-minute bus or taxi to Palestrina. The 3-kilometer uphill hike requires sturdy shoes and moderate fitness. Return via bus or taxi to Zagarolo station for trains back to Rome.
