This is a fantastic region for hiking in Greece, and one of the most famous hikes, the Vikos Gorge, is here located. Unfortunately, the summer is not the ideal time for hiking around here, with temperatures of 35 C on top of the canyon. For that reason, we had to do the shorter loop suggested in the Lonely Planet guide of the best hikes in Europe. And it was a lovely hike. Starting in pretty Monodendri, where you can find parking, accommodation, and food, you go down to the bottom of the canyon using the same trail that heads to Vikos. At the bottom of the canyon, you turn right towards the dry river, and after crossing it, follow the trail down river until the bridge. Little after the bridge, the ascencion to Vitsa starts.
The trail is mostly shaded by trees and thilus suitable even in summer. Neverthess it is advisable to do it early in the morning or late afternoon.
Notes: Most of the loop is part of the Epirus trail and thus is very well marked with red dots. For a while, when the trail does not overlap with Epirus, the dots are pink.
You do have to cross the river bed a few times. It is well indicated. Once you have to walk on the riverbed for 200 m and return to the same bank.

Amazing hike. Although if you do it in winter, you will have to cross the river without shoes, the water go until your knee! So be aware:)
