This is a loop hike starting/ending at around Gariwerd Motel / Grampians YHA - but you can start and finish it anywhere in Halls Gap. It's a good option if you have just a morning or an afternoon and can't do a full day of hiking.
The ascent is not too bad. Be careful when you get to the saddle and the first views. I strayed off trail here as other walkers have created a path that looks a lot like the trail but isn't, in order to get a view down into Halls Gap. I then lost 15 mins or so bush bashing back down to the main trail. Poles were good for this, but otherwise more of a hindrance given the quality of the trail and type of rocks/soil.
Once you get near the top you need to go up the narrow shoot and then turn right and do a short bit of rock scrambling to reach the summit. There are four bolts in the rock more or less at the summit point - so there must have been a marker there once upon a time. There was wombat poo at the top, I have no idea how the wombat managed the rock scrambling...
As I started this hike mid afternoon, by late afternoon there was a lot more bird life out and about, which was lovely. The flowering bush all around was lovely, but I only saw one orchid - I think I was a week or two too early...
On the way back I tried the famous Spirit of Punjab restaurant for dinner - it's okay but not amazing.
Enjoy!
