near Colinton, Scotland (United Kingdom)

Afueras de Edimburgo; las Pentlands; colinas y embalses / Edinburg outskirts; Treak in the Pentland Hills Regional Park, reservois and hills

We started the treak from Colinton, near its sports fields. From there we went down to the river path, a beautiful walk, along well-maintained roads, which took us to the town of Colinton itself.

From Colinton we went south through residential neighborhoods and small roads with little traffic until passing under the highway, to reach the Pentland Hills regional park.

After crossing some fences through doors and others by steps, we enter the park through small paths between clearings and forested areas crossed by small streams. After a while on this beautiful path, we connect with a much wider compacted dirt track, which could even be cyclable. By this we got up a long way to the hills area, with sheeps in pastures and scrubs. And thanks to the height we gained we had the first views of the city behind us, in the fog.

Following this track we reach an artificial reservoir in the upper area, the Bonaly reservoir, which seems to be quite old, since it is not made of concrete. And we continue along the track to go down to the other side of the hill, where the largest reservoir in the area awaits us, Glencorse, which even has a small island. The views during the descent were spectacular, with the reservoir and the highest peaks in the background.

Once we reached the reservoir, we left to an asphalted road, which we followed along the reservoir and we continued going up to the next reservoir, the Loganlea reservoir. In this there are some piers and a small picnic area, where we stopped to eat something. At the bottom of the reservoir we left the asphalt road to climb the hills.

The climb takes us to the highest peak of the Pentlands, the Scald Law with an altitude of 579 meters. And from there we see the wide path that will take us through the other two peaks that we will climb, Carnety Hill (573 m.) and Turnhouse Hill (506 m.) The road is very clear and easy, although it has quite steep slopes. From the last hill we go down to the east, and down we take the path that goes up the Glencorse stream, supposedly to a waterfall, although the access to the waterfall is forbidden, so we did not get to see it ...

From there we walk again close to the Glencorse reservoir to take the road back through the hills, first by small paths until a crossroads, where we turn to a wide track that will be the one that will finally get us down to where we accessed the park, to where we arrived after crossing a very clear field. After this we return to Colinton by the same way we came, following the Bonaly stream under the highway.

A beautiful route to get to know the landscapes of Scotland without going far from Edinburgh, although a bit long, but it is definitely worth getting close to know this area.
