Snow hike to Kumotori-yama
It was a very warm winter day, with near positive temps and perfect blue skies.
We started from Kamosawa bus stop, after a 30-minute bus ride from Okutama station and got there at around 7:30.
There was a handful of hikers in the bus and most were probably going the same way.
At first the trail was free of snow but after less than 30 minutes we encountered patches of ice, after a while it became relatively slippery and we put on the small crampons.
Yet the trail was still only covered in snow or ice intermittently and walking on dirt and rocks with crampons was no pleasure.
We maintained a steady pace and for a couple of minutes we had 2 trail runners in our back, they were barely faster than us so it took them considerable time to pass us. At that time I had removed my jacket and pulled up my sleeves, almost as if walking with just a T-shirt.
At the intersection leading to Nanaishiyama a bit of wind welcomed us and deeper snow was present. I put back my jacket and it started to be more interesting. The trace was well marked and rapid progress could be made.
From Nanaishiyama we had a great view of the major peaks of the South Alps and Fuji. Lower mountains barred the view in direction of Yatsugatake and the North Alps.
We got to Kumotori summit at 11:15, 15 minutes earlier than my original target. At the top rime covered the top of the trees but was started to fall. There was still enough to feast one's eyes and take satisfying pictures.
On the way down we bypassed Nanaishiyama and aimed to be back to the bus stop by 14:40. A lot of snow had melted but icy patches remained so it was delicate to choose when to remove the crampons.
We were back to the station at 14:17 and overall it took 6:37 vs. about 10:00 map time (a section around Nanaishi is not clearly indicated)
At the bus stop a hose proved very helpful to clean one's gears while waiting for the bus.
Overall a nice snow hike, at steady pace with perfect weather, possibly too hot for winter.
