Spring hike form Nishitanzawa to Hinokiboramaru

Due to strong wind the original plan to climb more than 2000m and map time 11:30 was heavily changed to a moderate hike.

From Nishitanzawa to Inukoeji the Tokaishizen hodou is very easy for the first half and gradually becomes steeper in the second half. For almost the whole trail after 25 minutes of forest road up to Inukoeji (map time 1:20) rock falls present a serious danger. Hopefully the wind was not strong when we passed this part.

From Inukoeji to Kumakusa (map time 2:00) the trail is pretty wild with lots of small rocky ups and downs, several sign boards are planted on each side of the trail to dissuade inexperienced hikers to venture on this trail. Strong winds (apparently typical at this period of the year in Tanzawa) made progression slightly slower.
In spite of the danger sign on the map (which in my opinion often exaggerate things) there was no particularly delicate stretch.

The last part ( map time 0:40) to Hinokibora is almost level before a last uphill stretch with little slope. Due to the strong winds we dropped by the Aokigatake hut, which is still closed, resting there has a price: 200 yen / 30 minutes which I found outrageous...

From Hinokibora to Nishitanzawa bus stop we follow the Tsutsuji Sindou route. The name is appropriate as we saw many of those purple flowers (which can be seen also on the Tokai trail. The first 1/3 to the view point has lots of wooden stairs and steep rocky parts, not difficult technically but demanding on the knees. The second 1/3 is a mix of steep rocky parts and dirt track of little slope. The last 1/3 is almost entirely dirt with even level stretches.
At Gorasawa deai, the water level was much higher than last month and the double river crossing proved to be relatively athletic. I'd like to know if the group of seniors behind us managed to make it to the bus stop with dry shoes…

Overall the Inukoeji ridge was clearly the highlight of the day, unfortunately the weather was comparatively worse than the few other times I spent in the area with poor visibility. This should make for a great winter hike (too bad the winter in Tanzawa is quite short)
